How a chimney pushes odor into the room

A chimney is meant to carry smoke up and out. When there is no fire, the air in the flue can just as easily flow down. On hot days the air in the house is cooler and heavier than the air in a sun-heated chimney chase, and on windy days gusts across the cap can push air down the flue. Exhaust fans and clothes dryers pull air out of the house too, and the open chimney becomes one of the easiest places for replacement air to come in.

Creosote and soot lining a wood-burning flue hold a strong smell, and humidity from summer storms can make it stronger. The air coming down picks that up and delivers it to the hearth. Damper problems are common: a damper that has warped, rusted or simply been left open lets far more air through than a closed one.

Gas fireplaces can produce odors too, often a dusty or burning smell the first time they run in fall. That is usually dust on the burner and logs. A persistent smell of gas is different, and is a reason to shut the unit off, leave and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.

When fireplace odor tends to show up

Late spring
First warm days reverse the airflow in the chimney and the smell of last winter's fires starts to drift in.
Summer storms
Humidity rises briefly and creosote odor intensifies, especially after rain enters an uncapped flue.
Windy fall and winter days
Gusts across the chimney top push air down, and the house can smell of soot even with the damper shut if it does not seal.
First gas fireplace use
Dust burns off and causes a brief odor that should fade quickly.
During listing or move-in
An empty house with exhaust fans running and windows shut can pull air down the chimney all day.

Matching the fix to the cause

  • IfThe damper does not close fully or is missingThenHave a chimney professional repair it, or ask about a top-sealing damper that closes the flue at the cap.
  • IfThe flue has not been swept in yearsThenSchedule a cleaning and inspection. Removing creosote also lowers fire risk.
  • IfThere is no chimney capThenA cap keeps rain and debris out, and many styles reduce wind-driven downdrafts.
  • IfOdor is mostly at the hearth and fireboxThenClean the firebox, glass doors and hearth surround, and consider sealing the brick if a chimney professional recommends it.
  • IfThe fireplace will not be used at allThenAsk a chimney professional about properly blocking the flue, and label it clearly so nobody lights a fire later.
